Why McCain Deserves to Lose?

As it stands now, John McCain will lose this election to Barack Obama. Pundits inside the beltway will insist that he was the most electable Republican, that he fought a valiant and honorable campaign, but simply could not overcome the headwinds of a Republican brand in trouble and an unpopular Republican in the White House.
Bunk. If he loses, it is a defeat of his own doing.
In one of history's all-time ironies, he is trying to win an election by distancing himself from his own party, and he is losing to a man who says he will win American support abroad by distancing himself from his own country's greatness. Well "God Damn America," neither will work.
Much like the hyprocritical cries of liberals that America is not respected after they spent the past eight years trashing the country themselves, the Republican brand and current President are unliked largely due to the efforts of McCain himself - aided by others with a media fetish like Lindsay Graham and Chuck Hagel. Political parties and nation states surely share one thing in common - they have never been liked outside their borders unless they liked themselves. More importantly, they are never respected from the outside unless they have self respect. Without it, you give others permission not to like or respect you.
McCain has given the rest of the planet plenty of permission to hate Republicans, and thus is hardly an innocent victim of this dymanic.
For all of McCain's reaching across the aisle, coddlng of the media, stifling of a President in his own party and even turning of the other cheek in light of obvious Democrat transgressions, he is hardly riding a groundswell of press adulation and magnificent moderate votes into the White House. His campaign of asking folks to love him because he hates his party -- is failing. Some Democrats may dislike McCain with a little less intensity than they would Mitt Romney, but they will vote against him nontheless. (Meanwhile, what kind of effect on the undecideds would a financial turn-around specialist like Romney have about now? Just a thought for those Huckabee supporters.)
And when Barack Obama takes the oath of office in January, he and his supporters will probably be just as surprised when the rest of the world suddenly does not fall in love with Uncle Sam. While the status of being an Anti-American rock star socialist might draw you 200 thousand people in a Berlin campaign stop, it will not promote our national interests in reality. History tends to reward the actions of men like Churchill and Reagan. Focus groups tend to like the Clintons, Obamas and had they been around in the 1930's, no doubt the Chamberlains.
Somewhere, maybe in a Frank Luntz focus group, the idea was hatched that you can promote yourself by being enlightened enough to harp endlessly on your imperfections and fall in love with your enemies. Really? I think the high water marks for America's reputation in world history seem to fall on the heels of America's unapologetic military destruction of evil in defense of freedom. Such success allows your allies to trust and respect you while your enemies fear you. This is all good.
Similarly, the top moments for the Republican brand in the past few decades would be the Reagan era and the Contract with America election cycle. Both were the result of confident partisan advocacy in defense of freedom, not self-loathing. Style did not matter so much, as Reagan won with humor while Gingrich led a movement of more heated intensity. They both won big -- including "moderates" -- while the beltway pundits were making fun of them at every step for being right wing extremists.
All of which makes McCain's campaign an incredibly agonizing "we told you so" lesson for many in the conservative base who knew him better than most of those who voted for him. These folks have cringed at every Maverick moment as McCain gained media cred by fighting against the few conservative initiatives put forth by the Bush administration. These are the folks who never bought into the maverick myth. Folks who understood that trashing conservatives in front of the Washington press corps hardly takes courage. It is akin to an Illinois Assemblyman speaking out against the Iraq war at an anti-war rally in Chicago, for example.
Which brings us to the precipice of a disasterous election. With four weeks to go, there is time to turn it around, but it will take a significant change in direction. McCain will have to become a real maverick to do so. He will have to look into the great headwind of bipartisanship and become blatantly partisan on the issue of the economy and hang it around the head of liberal policies and liberal cronies. He should at least give President Bush as much credit on preventing another 9-11 attack as he gave to Joe Lieberman. He will have to borrow Romney's C-PAC line that "most of our problems have come from too many Republicans acting like Democrats" and that the solution is hardly to elect real Democrats.
Further, he will have to prove that he indeed does have the courage he claims to "fight for the American people" and not the American government. It would help to borrow some of Sarah Palin's lines about "governement too often is the problem" (can you say Fannie and Freddie?). He will have to have the courage to look conventional wisdom in the eye and do the opposite. C'mon Mac, a real maverick would relish such an opportunity.
If he cannot do this, he does not deserve to win the election, and we will be left with "the Evil of Two Lessors.".

"I think it is worrying that some in-vitro fertilization clinics are using Viagra in order to boost fertility results," Glenn said. "Couples that go there for treatment are, by definition, already having problems getting pregnant. Giving male partners something that could make the problem worse is scarcely the right approach."
Glenn also expressed concern over the long-term effects that recreational Viagra use might have on people's fertility.
"Viagra has become a widely used recreational drug," Glenn said. "It is mixed with cocaine, for example, and is sold in clubs. Our work leaves open the possibility that there could be a cumulative effect from taking Viagra, however, which could pose serious fertility problems in later life."
