McCain Hard of Hearing on Voter Anger

McCain Remains Hard of Hearing

By C. Edmund Wright

In a rally in Davenport, Iowa, John McCain continued to demonstrate some breath taking tone deafness with regard to what voters have been trying to tell his campaign via the internet, emails, talk radio and other town halls meetings. (Waukesha, Wisconsin comes to mind.)

Either that, or McCain is so in love with his bipartisan "reach across the aisle" persona that promulgating it has engulfed all other campaign priorities - including say -- the chance to win. Simply put, McCain is taking a few snippets of what town hall voters are saying to him and turning them into out of context Maverick talking points.

McCain started out by saying that  "we're the underdogs and we (Palin and McCain) know what to do to win this thing.  I'm here to ask for your help...in a tough and hard fought election. Are you ready to help me and Sarah Palin?"

So far so good. McCain is the underdog and angry voters do want to help. After that, he kind of starts missing the point.  What Mac is missing is that voters are mad because liberal politicians and liberal policies have tanked our economy. They are mad because McCain won't fight this fight and under the inertia of conventional wisdom, Republicans and conservatism are taking the blame for this misguided liberalism. They are mad because the very community organizing entities that ruined our economy with the seeds of the housing crisis are now threatening to turn Obama's small lead into a landslide with massive voter fraud. They are mad because anger is a first cousin of fear, and these people fear a socialist America under the "unfettered" liberalism of an Obama-Pelosi-Reid power troika. They fear the end of the country as we know it - at least for a few decades. They are mad because this should be an easy election to win and McCain does not seem able to see that.

McCain states enthusiastically that "they're (voters) angry....they're angry...they re angry...they're angry about the mess in Washington and Wall Street....and they're angry about the failure of leadership at this hour of national crisis. They are angry that our leaders are more interested in pointing fingers at each other and advancing their own political interests...than in coming together...Democrats and Republicans...to solve the big problems we face."

Soundtrack: delayed and tepid response. This surprised McCain.  As Mark Steyn said last week, McCain looks like "Yosemite Sam wandering around wondering why the dynamite didn't go off."

Frankly, it did not go off because McCain lit the wrong fuse. The anger out there is precisely because polticians - one in particular - will NOT point fingers. They are made because he will not name names. And it's not about some notion of "political interests" either. It's about being adult enough to lay blame where it properly belongs because solutions are impossible until you know what went wrong in the first place. It is not feasible to "come together" with the problem causers  in any realistic way to "solve the big problems we face." The only path to solution is by defeating the problematic politicians and their problematic policies. This, not some notion of a bipartisan legacy, seems to me a more plausible application of "putting country first." McCain wake up, they are MAD AT YOU and how you are campaigning and how you are putting a wet blanket over Sarah Palin.

"My friends..The stakes couldn't be higher for our economy and our country," says McCain. "We need to get the American economy back on the path of recovery and growth....I'll fix our economy...and get our country back on track. I know how to do that."

Which of course many voters, especially conservatives, doubt. There is nothing in McCain's background or his campaign that indicates he has any notion of how to get an economy going. His "I know how to do that" is almost Kerry-esque from 2004 when the Kerry-Edwards  answer to everything was to simply "do it better."  For all his flaws, McCain remains a far less offensive choice than the literally Marxist Barack Obama.

Conservatives used to worry that his flaws would cause all kinds of problems if he was elected. They now worry his flaws will keep him from getting elected - even against the most unaccomplished opponent in history.  This is not an election of the lesser of two evils, it is frighteningly the need to avoid "the evil of two lessors....Obama."

McCain acknowledges that "the heart of the problem is a housing crisis that has spread to all of our economy" yet he insists on beating the drums of  "Wall Street greed" and "coming together" to work for solutions. He keeps on trying to win this election on those themes, which is like trying to open the safe with a nerf hammer. He has pounded and pounded and pounded that "across the aisle" thing for months. The more he keeps pounding it, the more usless it becomes.

Perhaps he should revisit his best month, back in August when voters were not so angry. Back then, he launched some humorously tough ads at Obama. He gave a Reaganesquely conservative performance at Saddleback. He chose Palin as his running mate. The ticket peaked at her acceptance speech. And he took the lead in the campaign.

Then -- starting with his acceptance speech and on the same night including such moderate luminaries as Tom Ridge and Lindsey Graham -- his campaign lurched back to the middle. He has been losing ground ever since. This is so easy to see for folks outside the beltway. Outside the beltway where the voters are angry, and not for the reasons McCain is clinging to.

John McCain knows the voters are angry. He just can't seem to get it right on why they are angry. Really, it's very easy Mac. It is outlined here. ... Read More
