On a national sports talk show last week, I heard a pretty funny bit describing Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis as the "Hugh Hefner of sports." The line of thinking was that Davis, like Hefner, does not realize that he has become a caricature of himself. You know, like Hef is the only one on the planet who really wants to know what is behind that robe these days. (Yes, you'll need therapy to get over that visual....) and Davis is the only one who still likes those space age jogging suits and ridiculous glasses.
And on the other hand, we have the old warrior Joe Paterno, given up as being too old to compete again, on an amazing resurgence this year with his Penn State team. Paterno, unlike Hef and Davis, has successfully turned back the clock and returned to greatness.
